History and major workshops / seminars:
NOV96 - The need to form a support group for adoptive
families was proposed & founded by Mrs.Vidya Shankar & Mr.S.Shankar.
These adoptive parents, along with Dr.Srinath & Dr.Saraswati, Mr.Kamath
& Mrs.Sheela conceived SU-DATTA.
SEP97 - After a thorough planning exercise, Su-datta
was formally launched with the CHILD in focus.
NOV97 - Su-datta organized the first of the series
of workshops on adoption being regularly conducted.
The workshop & panel discussion on "Parenting
Adopted Children" was organized with Mrs. Pramila Nesargi MLA as
the Guest of Honour and noted columnist Mrs. Maya Kalyanpur as the Chief
Guest.
FEB98 - Workshops on 'Common behaviour issues for children'
& 'understanding your child' were conducted by pediatrician Dr.K.S.Srinath,
the President of Su-datta.
JUN98 - Workshop on 'Insight into today's child' was
conducted by Ms.Meena Jain of Shristi Special Acadamy.
SEP98 - For the first time in the country a two-day
residential program on Adoption was organized where in parents met child
welfare experts including Prof. Hoksbergen of Netherlands. Topics discussed
ranged from changing trends in adoption procedures and their implication,
child development, communication with the child about its adoptive status,
telling issues, search issues etc.
OCT98 - Karnataka State Council for Child Welfare along
with Su-datta organized Bal Utsav, a cultural festival for children
from institutions and orphanages.
NOV98 - During Adoption Awareness Week a seminar was
held where a panel of experts spoke on the scope of infertility treatment,
psychological aspects in adoption, legal aspects, institutional procedures
etc.
APR99 - A summer workshop, at Multi Disciplinary Training
Center, for adoptive families along with the children from institutions
was conducted. All children got down to shredding waste paper, soaking
them, producing finally paper sheets from pulp.
AUG99 - Famous collage artist Mr. V.Balu kept the adoptive
families & institution's children enthralled with his collage presentation
on Peace + Children. Later the children created their image of peace
and happiness.
SEP99 - IIM, Bangalore students conducted a study on
attitudes and perceptions in adoption which was aptly titled 'Bonding
Beyond the Umbilical Cord'. Contact Su-datta for more details on the
findings.
Nov99 - Adoption awareness week was full of activities
almost everyday. Su-datta addressed principals and school teachers on
the important role played by teachers as a part of the nurturing process
in the life of the adopted child. Experts spoke on 'Nature Vs Nurture'
and on 'Personality development of the child'. Indian Ace Cricketer
Mr Anil Kumble graced the program.
